KLR 650 overview
of the KLR 650, it is a single cylinder, water cooled 650cc adventure touring bike that was first introduced by Kawasaki in 1987. This bike has a serious commitment to it’s riders, it has stood the test of time making epic journeys across multiple countries and even entire continents giving the riders very little trouble. The KLR was built as a platform to handle moderate off-road situations and is very comfortable doing freeway speeds all day long. It does not by any means do anything spectacular but it will do it all pretty well. Actually that is not entirely true, the KLR 650 has been known to out last most dual sport motorcycles if maintained they can last upwards of 100,000 kms and if rebuilt you may get another 100,00 out of them.
KLR 650 History
This motorcycle has been through a lot, being born in the 80’s it survived the very cold economy of the 90’s and made it through a financial melt down of the 00’s. It has been adored by some because of it’s reliability, functionality and sheer will power to keep going but it has been ignored by most because of it’s beefy frame, slow revving engine, low power output and generally tame demeanor. In the last 2000’s BMW and KTM introduced their large adventure bikes to the motorcycle market and this introduction gave Kawasaki a chair to stand on. Because of the lower price tag of the KLR and its ability to handle the off road terrain better than its competition it put the KLR 650 in a very good position.
In 2008 Kawasaki completely redesigned the 20 year old machine and gave it a much needed update which included an engine that produced more horsepower (36BHP) and torque (33.4 FT-LB), an updated instrument panel including all bar controls, and updated fairing design for better wind protection. They revised the suspension, they added a double piston rear brake caliper with wave rotors, increased radiator capacity and a new rear swing arm and the list continues. There is a serious community of people that love these machines and I now understand why that is.
In a nutshell the KLR 650 is a do-it-all motorcycle that will take you anywhere you need to go.
